Males are Less Likely to Seek Help with Debt
Men are apparently less likely than women to seek debt help or debt advice. This
is because men are “problem solvers” and like to find solutions to problems
themselves, according to a recent study by the Money Advice
Trust.
Men who previously sought debt help but didn’t receive suitable debt advice at
the time were even less likely to try and get debt help again in the future.
Women tend to think about consolidating debt, whereas according to the centre
for research in social policy “men can be over optimistic about their chances of
improving their financial situation.”
Among couples, there is a reported occurrence of one partner becoming
responsible for the other partner’s debts. Quite often men will control the
financial situation online or on the phone and women will have less access to
money or to the financial situation, therefore less debt worries.
On many occasions men will need a bit more of a push than women in order to seek
debt help.
